Denise S. Bennett Receives Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole Living Legend Award
Mahogany Dime™ Award Recognizes Influential African-American Women
April 15, 2009 – Denise S. Bennett, president of DS Bennett Business Strategies and Focus Visions Mortgage Group, LLC, has been named as the 2009 recipient of the Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole Living Legend Award.
The annual award recognizes one African-American woman who embodies the spirit and success of its namesake, the former president of Bennett College for Women in Greensboro. The honor was presented at a gala event at the Carolina Theatre of Durham on April 18, 2009.
Past honorees include Justice Patricia Timmons Goodson, the first African-American woman to sit on the North Carolina Supreme Court, and Dr. Alma Adams, Professor of Art at Bennett College for Women, co-founder of The African American Atelier, Inc and member of the North Carolina General Assembly.
“This award is about a lifetime of achievement,” said Angela Ray, founder and president of Mahogany Dime LLC, award sponsor. “The longevity of Denise’s career and the extent of her impact through her work in the financial industry are what distinguished her as a nominee.”
But the award committee was also struck by Denise’s measurement of her own success. “According to Denise, her greatest accomplishment is her three sons—all collegiate and successful young men,” said Ray. Bennett’s emphasis on guiding and preparing young people was in perfect alignment with the mission of the newly formed Mahogany Dime Foundation. Award organizers established the foundation to enhance the self-esteem of low-income and underprivileged African-American girls through cultural programming, educational opportunities and special workshops. As part of the foundation’s efforts, one hundred tickets to the awards ceremony were donated to girls from the area.
